Aloo Tikki Basket Chaat is a popular Indian street food where crispy potato tikkis are served inside crunchy edible potato baskets, topped with chickpeas, chutneys, yogurt, and spices. It’s a mix of sweet, tangy, spicy, and crunchy flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

For aloo tikkis:

  • 3 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 2 tbsp cornflour or bread crumbs
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for shallow frying

For baskets (optional shortcut: use readymade puri baskets):

  • 2 large potatoes, thinly sliced into strips
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Salt

Chaat toppings:

  • 1 cup boiled chickpeas (or chana chaat mix)
  • ½ cup yogurt, whisked
  • 2 tbsp green chutney
  • 2 tbsp tamarind chutney
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • Chaat masala
  • Roasted cumin powder
  • Red chili powder
  • Sev (crispy noodles)
  • Fresh coriander leaves

Instructions

1. Make the baskets (optional)

  1. Arrange potato strips in a bowl or mold shape.
  2. Deep fry until golden and crispy.
  3. Remove and let them hold basket shape.

2. Prepare aloo tikkis

  1. Mix mashed potatoes with spices and cornflour.
  2. Shape into small flat patties.
  3. Shallow fry until golden and crispy on both sides.

3. Assemble chaat

  1. Place aloo tikki inside each basket.
  2. Add boiled chickpeas on top.
  3. Drizzle yogurt, green chutney, and tamarind chutney.
  4. Sprinkle onions, tomatoes, chaat masala, cumin powder, and chili powder.
  5. Top with sev and fresh coriander.
