Chilli Paneer is a popular Indo-Chinese dish made with crispy or soft paneer tossed in a spicy, tangy, and slightly sweet sauce with capsicum, onions, garlic, and green chilies. It can be served as a dry starter or a gravy dish with fried rice or noodles.

Ingredients

For paneer:

  • 250 g paneer, cubed
  • 2 tbsp cornflour
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (maida)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water (to make batter)
  • Oil for shallow frying

For sauce:

  • 1 onion, cubed
  • 1 capsicum, cubed
  • 2–3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1–2 green chilies, chopped
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp chili sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp cornflour mixed with 3 tbsp water (slurry)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Spring onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Mix cornflour, maida, salt, and water to make a thick batter. Coat paneer cubes in it.
  2. Heat oil and shallow fry paneer until golden and crispy. Set aside.
  3. In a pan, heat oil and sauté garlic and green chilies.
  4. Add onions and capsicum, stir-fry for 2–3 minutes (keep them slightly crunchy).
  5. Add soy sauce, chili sauce, ketchup, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  6. Pour in cornflour slurry and cook until sauce slightly thickens.
  7. Add fried paneer and toss well to coat in sauce.
  8. Cook for 1–2 minutes and turn off heat.
